Questions
Here are some extra questions that I found on the net!

What does a walrus have in common with a tree? You can tell how old a walrus is by the number of rings that you can find in a cross-section of its teeth just the way you can tell how old a tree is by the number of “growth rings” the tree has. Most walruses do not die from old age but from hunting. Some walruses will live to be 35 years old in the wild.

Nice view, don't you think?!?
What is the first thing that you immediately notice on a walrus? The first thing that you notice immediately on a walrus is its tusks. They are large canine teeth and both female and male walruses have them. Their tusks are made of ivory as you know and they can grow to be two feet long for the females and four feet long for the male walruses. Also, the male walruses tusks are much straighter, thicker and also heavier.

Walruses CAN look cute sometimes but other times...
Why does a walrus change colors? Walruses change their color from pink-to-cinnamon brown to a lighter shade when they go into the cold water because their blood vessels start to get smaller. Walruses are able to adjust to the surrounding temperatures with their blood circulatory system. When they get hot, their blood is pumped to its blubber and skin and it gets cooled down by the air or the water. When they’re cold, they can reduce the blood flow to the skin and blubber to save heat.

How do arctic people benefit from the walrus?
The arctic people in Alaska benefit from the walrus by doing many things. One thing is that the village people eat its meat and also fed to the dogs. Secondly, the skin is used to make umiak (walrus hide boats) boats and its intestines are used to make raincoats, window covers and floats. The arctic people also use the walrus’ ivory tusks to carve lovely pictures on them and also make a lot of different objects with the ivory tusks such as necklaces; the bones are used to make spearheads. In the past, native mothers would use the walrus’ blubber as a pacifier for her offspring. The native mother would take a chunk of blubber and put a stick through it sideways and let her young suck on it. The walrus’ oil is also used for food, light in oil lamps and to help heat arctic homes.
How is a walrus like a man?
Walruses walk on all four fins and the walrus can move on land as fast as a man can run. Other pinniped have to drag their hind ends around but a walrus can walk.
What weighs more, a walrus or a polar bear?
The walrus weighs more. Adult male walruses often weigh near two tons and the females are over one ton. The male walruses keep on growing until they are about fourteen or fifteen years old. Polar bears only weigh 900 pounds when they are fully grown.
Why do people say that the walrus has armor?
People say that a walrus has armor because the walrus’ skin is extremely wrinkly. Wrinkles are just like armors and protect the walrus when they “joust” or “argue” with other male walrus’. The thick skin of the walrus also helps them protect themselves from all their predators except for the orca whale, man, and polar bear.
Does the cold water make living in the Arctic hard for the walrus?
No, living in the Arctic is not hard at all for the walruses because they have blubber under their skin; blubber is their body fat. This protects them from the cold water in the Arctic. Their blubber also helps them to chase their prey underwater with amazing success because of the streamlining of their shape.
Where does a walrus spend its summer vacation?
In the winter, the walruses live in the ice pack of the Bering Sea. The ice moves away between April and June and the walrus also moves with it. During the summer, the Pacific walruses move with the ice pack to the Chukchi Sea in Russia.
What do walruses use their tusks for?
Male walruses use their tusks to argue or fight with other male walruses and they do that to earn the right to mate. Both female and male walruses also use their tusks to crack breathing holes in the ice during the winter and to pull themselves out of the water.
How do walrus’ get their food?
First of all, walruses have large whiskers and they use their whiskers to feel around until they find food. Then, they blow to get the food loose or to make it move so they can capture their victim. They need it to move because they can’t get to it because of their tusks.
